Casey Shaw gained an early appreciation for smart planning and good financial advice.
During his 13-year professional basketball career – he was the 37th pick in the 1998 NBA draft and also spent 11 years in Spanish and Italian leagues — Casey saw many players make unwise financial decisions that left them with little to show after their successful careers.
After working with a fee-only wealth manager who not only gave him solid financial advice but also helped him develop his own investment skill set, Casey decided that his next career would be working with athletes, business owners and others to design financial plans and manage their wealth.
As a financial planner with BDF, Casey adds value to his clients’ financial plans by updating net worth statements, analyzing insurance coverage, identifying investment opportunities, and running retirement projections based on various assumptions and scenarios.
Casey is uniquely qualified to help athletes balance the pressures of a high-profile career with their financial goals. “I understand the dynamics of limited career span and the consequences of undisciplined spending, and the fee-only structure of BDF allows me to keep the athletes’ best interests at heart.”
Just as in basketball, the way the team works together and functions as a whole determines the success of a financial plan. BDF’s team environment, which cultivates and draws on the strengths of many experienced CPAs, lawyers and investment professionals, is a natural fit for Casey’s talents and abilities.
Casey is currently working toward his Certified Financial Planner™ designation through Northwestern University’s Certification Education Program. He holds a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Toledo, where he played center for the Toledo Rockets, and a master’s degree in Biblical studies from Moody Theological Seminary.
For eight years, Casey and his wife, Dana Drew Shaw, have conducted a basketball camp at their Northwest Indiana church. “Having played in the NBA, I have a lot of credibility with kids, and I’ve tried to use that sports platform in a way that is meaningful.”
When he’s not serving his clients, studying for the CFP exam or inspiring children through basketball, Casey is spending time with his wife and their four children or using his pilot’s license to fly a high-wing Cessna – the only single-engine plane with a cockpit that will fit his 6’10” frame.
