Tom Collar, CFP®
What do you enjoy most about being part of the BDF team?
I get a tremendous amount of personal satisfaction from seeing clients and our BDF team reach their goals. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to help clients achieve a full life. As a Captain of one of BDF’s Ensemble Client Service Teams, I also have the opportunity to coach and mentor the BDF team to reach their career aspirations.
What makes you uniquely qualified for this work?
My analytical approach to problem-solving, and I am a good listener. It’s important to hear and understand a client’s perspective before offering solutions.
What does “Helping people make sound decisions to enjoy a full life” mean to you?
Helping a client identify their full life first, then charting a course to get there. At BDF, we have the opportunity to be the captain of the ship on that journey. It’s gratifying to hear from long-time clients about how far they have come since we first started working together.
What defines your own personal “full life”?
My full life is centered around being the best husband and father to my two children. Their love and support help me be my best. My parents instilled a good work ethic in me and helped me understand the importance of treating people right.
What’s the most influential book you’ve read and why?
Getting Naked by Patrick Lencioni – It’s not what you think – it’s about increasing personal vulnerability to build deeper relationships.
Tom learned the value of a strong team while playing soccer as a youth and in college. He strives to maintain the same mindset with client relationships. It is important to Tom that clients feel they are on the same team and working together toward their specific goals.
Navigating through tax law changes and the current investment landscape can appear to be a daunting, complex task. Because of this, many people are unsure about planning for the future – whether for retirement, college planning, or estate planning. As an empathetic listener who asks thought-provoking questions, Tom helps client’s sort through these financial topics. He finds it fulfilling to explain and educate clients on these concepts in an understandable manner and then to help them set and achieve their goals.
Tom’s extensive and varied experience at BDF makes him a unique and valuable member of the team. He began his career with the firm in 2004, joined the Wealth Management Committee in 2007, was promoted to Wealth Manager in 2012, and became an Owner in the firm in 2017.
In addition to leading client relationships for the firm, Tom is also a Captain for one of BDF’s Ensemble Client Service Teams. He is passionate about helping the BDF Team be the best version of themselves through goal setting and coaching. He finds it rewarding to play a part in a team member’s journey to reaching their career aspirations. He serves on the firm’s Hiring Team, and he also coaches the firm’s trainers.
